Viterbo is the capital of the northwestern province of the region Lazio with the same name. It is an ancient city, whose origin is shrouded in mystery. Some historians say it has an Etruscan origin. Undoubtedly there was a settlement on its exact position in Roman times. During the Middle Ages the city developed to the current Viterbo.

The historical center of Viterbo is one of the best preserved medieval towns of central Italy. It has many beautiful monuments such as the Palazzo dei Papi and the Cathedral of S. Lorenzo. The Palazzo Comunale, the Palazzo del Podestà and the Palazzo della Prefettura are also very worthwhile.

Other outstanding buildings are the San Francesco, Santa Maria della Salute, the Romanesque Chiesa del Gesù, the Palazzo Farnese and the Rocca (castle). Do not forget to visit the Fontana Grande in the square with the same name.

In the Museo Civico you will find many archaeological relics from prehistoric to Roman times, as well as a Pinacoteca with paintings by Sebastiano del Piombo, Antoniazzo Romano, Salvator Rosa, Antiveduto Grammar and others.
